A different kind of Sunday

Yesterday we did something a little different.  Actually, about 700 of us did.  Instead of showering up and putting on our Sunday best we put on work gloves, dirty jeans and matching blue t-shirts and hit the community.  Church outside of the building.  Being the literal hands and feet of Jesus to those around us.  Cool, cool, cool!

While there were dozens of projects going on around town, our family chose something we could do together and that was a little near and dear to us — cleaning up the fishing spots and lake shore around Lake Grapevine at Murrell Park.  It is one of the kids FAVORITE spots to go hiking with Daddy and it was neat to go there and give back.  We marveled after the fact that we were all so busy picking up trash that no one looked up to see the lake!  We were focused, we were busy, and we had a ball!

Put me in Coach…I’m ready to play!

Grant has ventured into the world of baseball this season for the first time.  As a newbie to 8U ball, he is doing phenomenal!!  After trying out a few different positions he has seemed to land very happily as a 3rd baseman.  It is a great compliment to his ability to catch grounders, pop ups, man a bag, and make that long and accurate throw to first base.  (Sure, I’m biased – but not really exaggerating all that much!  He’s good!)  He is currently in a batting slump, but that doesn’t seem to be slowing him down.  And….he’s having a GREAT time!

I’d upload video here, but unfortunately it isn’t letting me at the moment.  That, and you’d be deafened by the sound of my screams in the background.  I’ll admit it – I am an intense parent on the stands.  Maybe a little bit ‘Leigh Anne Tuoey-esk’ though I have yet to approach a coach on the field or back talk an opposing team’s parent.  But the season is young…..

Just kidding!  😉

Happy Valentines Day!

We started our day off right with strawberry milk and pink heart shaped donuts!  The kids were excited to get little gifts as well as sort through their candy bags from school.

Father/Son Retreat

Grant and Ritchie took off for the weekend on a Father/Son retreat through our church.  Not only were there a ton of church friends there, but several great friends from the neighborhood!  They had an amazing time!

The report I got was that they did activities such as archery, canoeing, shooting a gun, basketball and even an Olympics-style game.  But did they bring home any pictures of those activities??  No.  These were the pictures I saw on my camera when they got home:

Yes, that is my sweet son with his head in a toilet…the same toilet in the above picture….let me explain…

A dear, sweet, wonderful {demented} man at our church, David Lassiter, owns a plumbing business and thought it would be a fabulous idea to use (new) toilets and fill them with lemonade and mini-Snickers and see if the boys would bob for them.

I also hear that while they enjoyed looking at the toilet and giggling, several boys were unwilling to ACTUALLY put their face in and bob.  Not my son.  Full face in.

……boys……

We’re Rockin!

Another big hit from Christmas was a Guitar Hero World Tour Band from Aunt Tam and Uncle Darrell.  We have spent the dark, winter nights honing our skills as a band and everyone is having a blast!

Peyton is our resident singer.  She is working up quite a repretoire of songs, with ‘Eye of the Tiger’ topping the list.

Their band is called ‘Unemployed Youth’ — sorry for the darkness of the video, but you get the idea:

The Day-After-Christmas, Texas style!

How do Texan’s spend the day after Christmas, you ask??   Well swimming, of course!!!

December 26th just so happened to be a 78 degree day so our neighbors, the Wagner’s, heated up the hot tub and invited our kids down for a dip.

Can’t do that in most places!!

Christmas 2008

The day started at 7:00am as usual, with the pitter patter of big feet hoofing it down the stairs to see what awaited them under the tree!!

p1040071

The obvious first thing noticed was Peyton’s dollhouse!  She was very excited!  As was Grant with his big gift this year….a Wii!  Santa was a hero this year too, getting the kids the things they specifically asked him for — a pink kitty Webkin and a stuffed eagle.  How did he know?!?!  Miss Caroline chose to sleep in that day, but when she finally graced us with her presence she too was very excited to see her own dollhouse and lots of presents!  A really, really, really great day!!!!

Christmas Eve

christmas-eve

With our good ‘duds on we headed to church for Christmas Eve services!  The kids did pretty well sitting through the service, since they are used to going to kids church.  What had them excited was the candle lighting at the end (they each got their own candle!) and that they either knew most of the Christmas songs or could read them this year off the big screen!

When we got home we got busy decorating the last of our sugar cookies.  Fun was had by all and the kid wine was flowing!!  It is amazing to me the mileage we can get out of a bottle of sparkling grape juice!  Turns any day into a party!!

After the fun, all kids got into Christmas pj’s and hit the hay!!

Mom & Dad had alot of work to do!!  This year Peyton’s big gift from us was a Barbie house.  I had spent the last few months working on it – wallpapering, flooring, and painting and fixing up alot of my old Barbie furniture.  It was definitely a labor of love for me, but that “labor” had to be carried down from the attic after hours and put all back together in the family room!!  Look for pics in a page marked Dollhouse!!

Gingerbread Houses

p1030875

This weekend was “Gingerbread House Weekend”!  The kids have been asking forever so here we went!

p1030860

Poor Caroline — I only bought 2 houses assuming she was still too young to participate.  She was, but was a little distraught that she didn’t have her own house!  She was a trooper and watched the whole time – and then got her revenge by later tearing up Grant’s sidewalk when no one was looking!

It’s Christmas Picture Time!

Always a stressful, tear filled, loud voiced (me) time of year….when I desperately try to get a photo of all 3 of our children that is presentable enough to hand out to the masses.  What complicates this??  My frugality and wanting to do it all myself.  So, armed with a good attitude and nicely dressed kids clean from church, yesterday was the day to tackle the picture taking.  We started with a nice black backdrop (blanket) hung in a well lit area (toy room) and strategic placement of the kids.  I have to say that it went better than past attempts, but wasn’t without the usual issues!  Here are some of the shots that didn’t make the cut:

Peyton is so into the "model look" that she often over does it and you can't even see her face!

Nearly every picture Grant had "Igor" eyes! He kept saying, "What? This is how I look!"

Oops! I think Daddy yelled "Toot!" in the background!!

Doesn't every kid at 2 yrs. give the overly exaggerated "CHEESE!!!"?
Doesn’t every kid at 2 yrs. give the overly exaggerated “CHEESE!!!”?

All and all, we ended up with 1 great pic of each kid individually and a pretty decent group shot.  As I mentioned in a previous post, thank the Lord for Photoshop!  As is tradition with us, once again, one child’s head is cut out and superimposed onto the pic to make it just right!!  You’ll have to wait for the unveiling of the actual Christmas Letter to see the finished product!!
